    Artist Statement:
Binatang Biru is Indonesian for Blue Animals. This series is an exploration of my heritage as a Chinese-Indonesian woman in subject matters I adore. My love for intricate patterns started young as my grandparents used to own a batik factory in Jakarta long before I was born. Batik is a textile technique of using wax and dye originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. I also grew up surrounded by blue and white pottery all around the homes of my extended family. Looking back through years of being an artist, I realized how much I enjoy drawing intricate patterns. When I first started thinking about this series, I wanted to go home to my comfort zone of drawing cute animals while expanding what it means to embrace images of cultural arts I was inspired by while growing up in Southeast Asia.
